- From the junction of Highway 50 and 285, just outside of Poncha Springs, Co, travel west on Highway 50 for 6 miles to the town of Maysville. Turn right onto County Road 240 and travel northwest for 3 miles to the trailhead. You will pass the entrance for the Angel of Shavano Group area on the left and the trailhead is located on the right side of the road.

Angel of Shavano Campground

- The Angel of Shavano Campground is ideally suited for tent camping. The campsites are wooded with aspen and spruce trees along the north fork of the south Arkansas River. The Angel of Shavano Trailhead for the Colorado Trail #1776 is across the road from the campground. Dispersed camping spots may be found along 4x4 road FS 240) between Angel of Shavano and North Fork campgrounds.
- Fees
- $25 per site for overnight camping . Two vehicles or one RV per site is included in the camping fee. $10 for a third vehicle. $10 fee for day use if not camping overnight. Fees are payable by cash, check or money order. Self-servicing fee tube is available. Sites must be occupied the first night of payment. Interagency Senior/Access passes valid for 50% discount to the camping fee for one site.

- First-come, first-served. No reservations are accepted. Prior to Memorial Day weekend and after Labor Day hosts and water may not be available.
- Restrictions
- Maximum 8 persons per site. Tents and vehicles must be in designated spots. Dogs must be leashed. Stay limit of 14 consecutive days.

Angel of Shavano Group Area

- This group campground is located near the Angel of Shavano Campground and adjacent to the creek. Volleyball, softball and a horseshoe pit are available. Visitors must bring their own equipment, including volleyball net, baseball equipment and horseshoes. Parking is provided for 12-14 passenger vehicles. Firewood is sold by the campground host at the Angel of Shavano campground. The Angel of Shavano Trailhead for the Colorado Trail #1776 is across the road from the campground. The campground has a covered pavilion with picnic tables, six standing grills, five large picnic tables and a fire ring with benches.

- $145 per night. Maximum occupancy is 100 people.
- Reservations
- Use of this facility is by reservation only. Call 1-877-444-6777 or visit www.recreation.gov at least 4 days in advance. Friday and Saturday two-night minimum required stay on weekends. Three nights minimum on holiday weekends.
- Restrictions
- Parking is limited to 60'x120' area. Vehicles are not permitted in the lower meadow by the beaver pond. Dogs must be leashed at all times. No discharge of firearms or fireworks. Only licensed vehicles can operate inside campground.

Mount Massive (Fourteener)

- Mount Massive, at 14,421 feet, it is the second highest peak in Colorado at just 12 feet behind its southern neighbor, Mt. Elbert. Its name comes from its elongated shape: it has five summits, all above 14,000 feet, and a summit ridge over 3 miles long, resulting in more area above 14,000 feet than any other mountains in the 48 contiguous states, narrowly edging out Mt. Rainier. It is located in the Mount Massive Wilderness . This takes an average hiker 4 to 6 hours to the top. The primary access to Mount Massive is from the Mount Massive Trailhead that is adjacent to Elbert Creek Campground . From tis trailhead follow the Colorado Trail #1776 Segment 10 to the Mount Massive Trail #1487 . The summit may also be reached via the North Halfmoon Creek Trail #1485 , then to the South Mount Massive Trail #1451. The Mount Massive Wilderness was established in 1980 which was established in 1980 to preserve its quality, character, and integrity. This area is intended to be a place where the imprint of humans is substantially unnoticed; where natural processes are the primary influences, and human activity is limited to primitive recreation and minimum tools. Chalk Creek Canyon

- Chalk Creek Canyon, one of the valley's most popular areas.The Chalk Creek canyon was once home to the Chalk Creek mining district, one of Colorado's richest mining districts. During the 1870's and 1880's the towns of Hortense, Alpine, St. Elmo, Romley and Hancock thrived as a result of the discovery of gold and silver-laden ore. Camping and campfires are restricted in the Chalk Creek Canyon to Mt. Princeton Campground, Chalk Lake Campground, Cascade Campground and Iron City Campground only. Campers who are unable to find a campsite in one of the four developed campgrounds may camp above the townsite of St. Elmo on County Road 267 or near the Hancock townsite located 5 miles south on Forest Road 295. Additional camping is available in the Browns Creek area south of County Road 162 at the junction of County roads 270 and 272. An information and interpretive kiosk detailing the history and geology of the area is located just off of County Road 162. The Chalk Creek Trailhead for Colorado Trail #1776 is located across the road from this site.

- Tennessee Pass Trailhead accesses the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and Colorado Trail #1776 Segment 9 . The Colorado Trail and the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail follow the same path for approximately 200 miles. This area offers recreational activites for all four seasons. Tennessee Pass is a 10,424ft mountain pass that crosses the Continental Divide, separating the Mosquito and Sawatch mountain ranges as well as the Colorado River and Arkansas River watersheds. In the 1880’s a mining boom brought many prospectors to the area and the first railroad over the pass was built in 1881.
